Things to Do in Chicago This Weekend, With People Nearby

October 14, 2026 · 5 min read

A museum, two coffee cups and a map pin in front of the Chicago skyline

the short answer

Pick one small plan: a morning at Lincoln Park Zoo with the conservatory next door, an hour in one gallery followed by coffee, a walk on the 606 that ends at a café, or a skate under the skyline in Millennium Park. Each fits in a couple of hours and is more fun with someone else, whether that's a friend or someone nearby you meet on Lighthouse.

The best weekend plans in Chicago are usually small: a walk somewhere new, one exhibit, a coffee after. Nothing that takes a whole day or a group chat of twenty, just something easy to suggest to a neighbor or to someone who's into the same things you are.

Here are winter plans that fit in a couple of hours, grouped by the kind of time you want to spend together. Every idea here is better shared. If you don't have someone in mind yet, Lighthouse helps you meet people nearby who might be up for it. Hours and what each venue charges are checked against its own site, so you can pick one and go.

What are easy things to do in Chicago this weekend?

Choose one plan, not a whole itinerary:

  • A zoo morning: Lincoln Park Zoo when the gates open, then the warm conservatory next door.
  • One gallery, then coffee: an hour at the National Museum of Mexican Art, then lunch on 18th Street in Pilsen.
  • A walk with a café at the end: a stretch of the 606, coming down wherever looks good for coffee.
  • A skate after dark: the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park, from November 20.
  • A dusk walk downtown: the Riverwalk as the buildings light up.

Each one works for two people who've just started talking, or for a few neighbors who want to get out of the house.

Want company for one of these? Get Lighthouse to see who nearby is up for a zoo morning or a walk on the 606 this weekend, and join their plan.

A walk and a warm drink

The 606

Neighborhoods: Wicker Park, Bucktown, Humboldt Park and Logan Square · Cost: no admission · When: daily, 6am–11pm

A 2.7-mile elevated trail from Ashland to Ridgeway. You don't need to do all of it: walk a mile with someone from your neighborhood, then come down for coffee wherever looks good.

Lincoln Park Zoo and the conservatory

Neighborhood: Lincoln Park · Cost: no admission (parking $35–45 a day) · When: zoo gates 8am–5pm daily; conservatory Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm

Go on a quiet morning, see a few animals, and warm up in the indoor buildings (open 10am–4:30pm). The Lincoln Park Conservatory, five minutes away, is a Victorian glass house full of palms; reserve a timed entry before you go. It's an easy two-hour plan for anyone who likes being outside, even in January.

The Chicago Riverwalk

Neighborhood: the Loop · Cost: no admission · When: daily, 6am–11pm

The path stays open all year after the vendors close for the season. A loop at dusk, when the buildings light up, is an easy after-work plan or a calm end to a Saturday.

You don't need a whole museum day. Pick one gallery, give it an hour, and leave room for coffee and a conversation about what you saw.

National Museum of Mexican Art

Neighborhood: Pilsen · Cost: no admission · When: Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm, until 8pm on the first Wednesday of the month

A major collection of Mexican art in a size you can enjoy in an hour. Explore it with someone who shares your curiosity, then walk to 18th Street for lunch.

Chicago Cultural Center

Neighborhood: the Loop · Cost: no admission · When: daily, 10am–5pm (closed holidays)

Come for the Tiffany glass dome, stay for whatever exhibition or performance is on. It's a central, easy place to meet someone for the first time before heading anywhere else in the Loop.

Museum evenings for Illinois residents

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Streeterville doesn't charge Illinois residents admission on Tuesdays, 5–9pm, and the Field Museum doesn't on Wednesdays through March 31, 2027 (booking ahead is strongly recommended). Pick one hall rather than the whole building, and bring an ID with your address.

Something a little active

McCormick Tribune Ice Rink

Neighborhood: the Loop · Cost: no admission; bring skates or rent them (rentals were $17 on weekdays and $21 on weekends last season) · When: November 20, 2026 into February 2027, daily 11am–10:30pm, weather permitting

Skating right under the skyline. Even an hour of slow laps counts, and it's an easy plan to suggest to a couple of people at once. Beginner lessons on weekend mornings need registration.

ZooLights

Neighborhood: Lincoln Park · Cost: ticketed (tickets for four Mondays cost nothing and are released a week ahead) · When: November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, 4:30–9pm

An evening walk through the zoo in lights. Everyone needs a ticket, children included. The Monday dates are November 23 and 30 and December 7 and 14, with tickets released one week ahead at 11am Central.

Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza

Neighborhood: the Loop · Cost: open to walk in; food and mugs are paid · When: November 20 through December 24, 2026

Wander the stalls on a weeknight, share something warm, and you've got a plan. For the rest of the season, see our guide to things to do in Chicago in December.

A few things to plan around

  • Parking. Lincoln Park Zoo has no admission fee but parking is $35–45 a day. The bus keeps the plan easy.
  • Timed entry. The Lincoln Park Conservatory, Field Museum days and ZooLights all use timed or advance tickets.
  • Two different rinks. The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink has no admission fee; the Maggie Daley Park ribbon next door sells timed sessions.
  • Proof of residency. MCA and Field Museum resident days ask for an ID with your Illinois address.

Make it a plan with someone nearby

The easiest plans fit in one message: "Zoo at 9 on Saturday, coffee after?" Lighthouse is a social app for meeting people nearby who share your interests. You can see who's around and what you have in common, start an activity for the plan you have in mind, or join one someone in your neighborhood has posted. Each activity has its own group chat, so you can say hi and agree on the details before you meet.

Good to know

  • Check before you go: hours and dates change, especially around holidays and in bad weather. That goes for anything in this post, too. Each listing links to its official source below.
  • Getting there: the Loop spots are a short walk from most CTA 'L' lines, and Lincoln Park Zoo and the conservatory are easiest by bus.
  • Tickets and prices are set by each venue. Lighthouse is for meeting people and making plans; it doesn't sell tickets or get anyone in.
